Search for Fife teenager resumes

The search for a teenager missing after he fell off a pier in Fife while fishing resumed today at 7.30 am.

Forth Coastguard said the 16-year-old was with a friend in Newburgh, Fife, when he slipped and plunged into the Firth of Tay.

A helicopter from RAF Boulmer, two local lifeboats and coastguard teams from St Andrews and Carnoustie were involved in a four-hour search of the coastline last night but no trace of the missing boy was found.

Angus N MacIver, Watch Manager, said: "The boy was fishing on the pier with a friend when it appears he slipped and went into the water. The tide was going out at the time, which may mean he was swept out from the shore. We know he is a poor swimmer and the longer it goes on the more concerned we are for his safety and at this late stage hope for the lad is fading."

Members of the Newburgh Sailing Club also assisted coastguards with the sea search last night.

The boy, who lives locally, fell into the water around 7.30pm yesterday.

An air, sea and shoreline search was launched half an hour later but rescuers were stood down shortly after midnight.

This morning, St Andrews Coastguard Rescue Team and local volunteers including members of the local Emergency Services are conducting a shoreline search of the area. Broughty Ferry Lifeboats are searching the river from Newburgh to the Tay Rail Bridge.
