Blair back in No10 'fresh and alert' after heart op
The Prime Minister has arrived back at Downing Street today "feeling fresh and alert" following his heart operation last week.
Mr Blair spent the weekend at Chequers – the Prime Minister's countryside retreat in Buckinghamshire – before returning to Downing Street to prepare for his visit to Africa this week.
The Prime Minister was admitted to hospital on Friday to undergo a second operation to correct an irregular heartbeat, or "flutter".
Mr Blair underwent the two-and-a-half hour operation, which No 10 described as "minor and routine".
It is understood that Mr Blair had suffered a recurrence of the heart problem, which first came to public attention last year, for the past two months.
At a press briefing today, the Prime Minister's Official Spokesperson dismissed concerns that engaging in a demanding diplomatic schedule in Africa would be a setback for Mr Blair's recovery.
The Prime Minister, he said, acted on the advice provided by doctors who were clearly better placed than anyone else to judge such matters.
The core part of the trip will be the meeting of the Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, between October 6 and 8.
No 10 said that the meeting would "feed into and inform" the G8 agenda which would look at the problems facing Africa - such as those relating to conflict, disease and, in some cases, weak governance. Britain takes over the 12-month presidency of the G8 council of the world's leading economic countries on January 1 2005.
