Man Utd confirms 'preliminary approach'

Former Premiership champions Manchester United has confirmed that it has received "a preliminary approach" for a club takeover.

The Man Utd board issued a statement today following a speculation in the media over the weekend that the US billionaire Malcolm Glazer was preparing a bid.

Mr Glazer, who owns the US NFL team Tampa Bay Buccaneers, holds a 19.17% stake in the club.

Man Utd said today that the approach contained "a number of significant conditions".

The club statement added: "The company is seeking clarification of this proposal and at this stage it is unclear whether any offer will be made."

Late this afternoon, the club's share price was up 12.25p to 269.50p per share.
