Everything's still to play for, Howard tells party faithful

Despite their humbling at the Hartlepool by-election, Tory leader Michael Howard has told delegates at the party conference that they "have everything to play for" at the forthcoming general election.

In a speech to a party agents' dinner ahead of today's opening of the annual conference in Bournemouth, Mr Howard said that the party was "in good shape" regardless of the results of last week's poll which saw the official Opposition beaten into fourth place behind Labour, the Lib Dems, and UKIP.

He dismissed the vote as a blip and pointed the party's stronger performances in June's local elections – where it gained 300 new councillors and took control of 14 additional councils.

Mr Howard said: "We have everything to play for. The choice before the British people is a clear one. There is the Labour way - more talk, more division, and a lame duck Prime Minister. Or there is the Conservative way - accountable government, policies to make Britain more free and more secure, and strong leadership united behind a noble task. To make Britain a better place for all its citizens. With your help - the professionals in our party - I know we can do it."

At the conference this week, Mr Howard said that voters could expect to see detailed policies – on crime, choice over healthcare and schools, immigration, wasteful spending, and better value for taxpayers money – which will "make Britain a better place to live in".
