New scheme set to nurture UK's sporting talent
A new multi-million pound initiative set up to enable young people to continue their sporting careers after leaving school has been launched by the government today.
Around 800 young men and women will be named today as the first recipients of the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) bursaries.
For 18 to 25-year-old TASS scholars in higher or further education the scheme will provide an annual grant of £3,000 to cover coaching, sports science, physiotherapy and the use of training facilities.
Sixteen to 19-year-olds still in education or in their first job will receive a grant worth £1,000.
Five times Olympic champion, Sir Steve Redgrave who will act as the scheme's ambassador, said: "TASS is an exciting idea which I hope will make a major contribution to producing the sporting talent we need to represent Britain in Beijing in 2008 and, I hope, in London four years later."
Applicants for grants will be nominated by one of the 47 sports' governing bodies that are backing the scheme, which covers over 30 different sports ranging from canoeing to tennis and also includes 15 disability sports.
One of the 800 successful applicants for the TASS scheme is Lianne Sanderson, a 16-year-old ladies footballer from Catford in East London, who signed up for Arsenal at just 14 and has now set her sights on playing for the England senior team.
Lianne has welcomed the scheme and recognises that it is an "invaluable help for young people".
Tessa Jowell, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport, said she hoped the scheme would help young sportsmen and women "achieve their full potential as they make the transition from school to further education or first job".
