Sailing: British 49er class gain place third overall

In race 12 of the 49er class, Britain's Chris Draper and Simon Hiscocks recovered from a mediocre start, down in 14th place by the first mark to sweep through the mid fleet to finish fourth.

With a fourth place in race 12 and a second place in race 11 the duo have pushed their way into third place overall, though they are tied on points with the Ukraine team.

The real breakthrough for Draper and Hiscocks came yesterday when in light winds they made good on a poor poor tenth place to end up 50 seconds ahead of the Australian boat, though with fickle winds the Aussie crew bounced back to overtake the GB duo.

Currently with only four races left, the race for the medals is still tight as Spain on 46 points are nine net points ahead of British and Ukranian boats on 55 points - and the USA on 60 points just trailing a medal spot by five points. Ireland's 49er class team are currently in 16th place.

Mistral windsurfer Nick Dempsey, despite winning race 9, has a steep task as the leading windsurfers extended their points lead in the overall standings with better finishes today that the British windsurfer who is in fourth place overall.

In the Tornado catamaran class the British pair are in 14th place. In the Star Class keelboats the British crew are in ninth place overall on 26 points, while the Irish duo trail the fleet on 48 points
