Cornwall flood village rescue teams praised
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has praised the emergency services as "absolutely superb" following flash flooding in a village in Cornwall.
The coastal village of Boscastle was hit by flooding yesterday after torrential rain battered the north Cornwall beauty spot.
Cars, businesses and homes were washed away. Over 100 people were airlifted to safety by helicopters. A clean-up operation in the village is now underway.
The Deputy Prime Minister said the emergency services, local authorities, volunteers, local residents and visitors had all done a "first class job".
"Like so many people in the UK, yesterday's events in Boscastle were profoundly shocking for me," he said.
"I would like to thank the emergency services for their dedication and hard work."
Before arriving in Boscastle, Mr Prescott visited scores of people who spent the night at a centre in Camelford.
"I have been talking to the people who have immediately been hit," he said.
"They have got some immediate problems. I am going to see how we can help them."
At least 50 vehicles were swept away and a number of buildings demolished.
Members of the public concerned about friends or family should call the Police helpline on 01392 451130.
