Eight men charged with terror offences

Eight men have been charged with terrorism-related offences, the BBC has reported today.

All eight are expected to appear before Bow Street Magistrates Court tomorrow and will face charges including conspiracy to commit murder.

A ninth man who was also being held has been charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.

Reacting to the developments, Home Secretary David Blunkett said: "I have been informed by the Met Police of the charges brought today.

"I have been kept regularly updated throughout the investigations and I am pleased to see that the police have been able to benefit from the changes I introduced last year to extend the period for questioning of terrorist suspects from 7 to 14 days.

"We must now let the judicial process take its course."

Under the terms of the Terrorism Act, the police can hold suspects for a total of two weeks for questioning. The deadline whereby the nine men must be released or charged was scheduled to pass this afternoon.

The nine men were among 13 people arrested on August 3 as part of a nationwide operation.
