Personal safety top fear for UK holidaymakers, says survey

British holidaymakers are most seriously concerned over travelling and personal security when heading abroad, according to research published today by Leger Holidays.

The company, one of the UK’s leading coach holiday operators, polled 1,000 people and, climate aside, the journey to the destination (16.9%) and personal safety and security (15.6%) were consumers’ greatest concerns.

Leaving a home vacant (12.2%), injury or illness (9.7%) and an inability to communicate with foreigners (6.7%), were other worries troubling holidaymakers.

Huw Williams, marketing director at Leger Holidays, said: “Had we asked these questions 10 years ago then I think we would have seen very different results. Fears over travel and personal security probably wouldn’t have been nearly as high.

“Terrorism wasn’t as front-of-mind back then, but world events since have focussed holidaymakers’ minds and this is borne out in the findings from our research. Today’s holidaymakers have very real fears.

“On a lighter note, as a nation we’re obsessed by the weather, especially given the climate we’re living in, so discussing it is as much a national pastime as it is a grave concern.”

Responses regionally showed ‘journey to the destination’ was the greatest worry for Southerners (21.9% against a national average of 16.9%); ‘injury or illness’ concerned people in East of England the most (21.5% against 9.7%); ‘leaving a home vacant’ troubled Lancastrians the greatest (23.5% against 12.2%); ‘inability to communicate with foreigners’ had Londoners most anxious (14.6% against 6.7%); while ‘personal safety and security’ was again top in the London region (20.9% against 15.6%).
