Proposals for new flooding strategy published

Proposals to combat increasingly frequent and severe flooding in England have been published today.

The new strategy examines what could be done to tackle all types of flooding including coastal, river, groundwater, sewers, urban and road drainage problems.

Views are now being sought to the proposals found in the consultation paper 'Making Space For Water'. Current arrangements are now 11 years old.

The paper proposes using traditional measures, such as sea walls, alongside approaches that 'make space for water' like saltmarsh buffer zones and using strategic roads as flood channels.

Recent government studies have indicated that the frequency and severity of flooding will increase over the next 100 years due to climate change and other pressures.

Launching the consultation today, Environment Minister Elliot Morley said: "We must factor in and plan for this across the board, working closely with the insurance industry and other interested parties, so that the adverse consequences for people and for business are minimised."

The consultation closes on November 1, and the final strategy is expected to arrive in early 2005.
