Father jailed for life for murdering baby son
A 40-year-old man has been given a life sentence after being found guilty of murdering his infant son in a bakery in Carlisle last year.
Shahajan Kabir was found guilty at Carlisle Crown Court today of murdering 10-month-old Hassan Martin in vicious knife attack. He was jailed for life, with the recommendation that he serve at least 12 years.
Kabir, an illegal immigrant from Bangladesh, was also found guilty of two charges of unlawful wounding of Hassan's mother and grandmother.
On October 21 last year, Lorna Martin was in Gregg's bakery in Scotch Street, Carlisle, ordering a birthday cake for her son's first birthday when Kabir, armed with a 12-inch knife, entered the shop.
He attacked Hassan, who was in a pushchair, and slashed his throat. The baby was taken immediately to Cumberland Infirmary where he was pronounced dead. Lorna and grandmother Pauline Martin were both injured trying to defend the child.
Kabir had denied murder on the grounds that he was depressed and not responsible for his actions.

Paul Deya, now 32, murdered his son, in their home on the Lynton Estate in Southwark on 23 November 2009. He was also found guilty of GBH with intent against his wife on the same date.

Teen Found Guilty Of Murdering 'Street Drinker'
A teenager has been found guilty of murdering a "street drinker" in an unprovoked attack in Hayes. Daryl O'Connor, 18, of Peal Gardens, West Ealing was found guilty this week of killing Tarsen Nahar in April, 2007. He was also found guilty of assaulting Mr Nahar, causing actual bodily harm two weeks previous without motive.

A former nightclub bouncer has been found guilty of the murder of Milly Dowler. Milly, 13, went missing while walking home from school on 21 March 2002 in Walton-on-Thames in Surrey. Her body was found six months later in Hampshire. Following a trial at the Old Bailey Levi Bellfield, 43, was convicted of her murder. He denies the charge.

Armel Gnango, 17, had denied murdering Magda Pniewska, 26, in New Cross, south London, last October. A post-mortem found that Ms Pniewska, of Polish origin, had died of a bullet wound to the head.
