Two firefighters die tackling Bethnal Green blaze
Two firemen have died while tackling a blaze at a shop and flats in east London this morning.
Around 30 firefighters were called to a blaze at a shop and three-storey flats on Willmot Street, off Bethnal Green Road, just after 4am. Two members of the public were rescued from the roof of the building by firefighters.
However, during the incident two firefighters were seriously injured and taken to the Royal London Hospital. Due to the extent of their injuries both subsequently died, London Fire Brigade confirmed today.
London Fire Commissioner Ken Knight has expressed his "great sadness" at the death of the firefighters and extended the brigade's sympathy to their families and colleagues.
FBU President Ruth Winters said: "Their deaths will be felt throughout the UK fire service. The thoughts of everyone in the fire service are with their families at this time."
The two members of the public were released from hospital after a routine check up.
