Eleven England fans deported following Monday riot
A Portuguese judge has sentenced a 46-year-old England football fan to two years in prison for his part in a riot in the Algarve.
Gary Mann, from Faversham in Kent, will be deported to serve the custodial sentence in an English jail. Ten other English fans arrested will also face deportation. One further England supporter was found not guilty.
All the accused had denied the charges against them when they appeared in court after some 200 England supporters had clashed with Portuguese police in Albufeira on Monday evening.
One of the 12 England fans arrested received a nine-month sentence, six others received seven-month sentences, all the sentences were suspended for three years.
Those found guilty have been banned from returning to Portugal for five years, and one fan although cleared of charges was told not to return to Portugal for a year.
One of the fans arrested was acquitted will be allowed to remain in Portugal. Three other football fans are to be deported and may face further investigations by authorities.
A Russian arrested during the fracas in Albufeira on Monday, in which missiles were thrown at Portuguese police, is also to be deported.
Judge Filipe Marques said that Gary Mann had been arrested for throwing a bottle at Military Police and had incited others to do the same.
Uefa are not treating the incident as football hooliganism and said that it appeared to be separate to the Euro 2004 competition.
A number of England fans were detained after further trouble erupted on Tuesday night - they are due to appear in court in Portugal later this week.
It is understood that those involved in incidents in Portugal and anyone deported may face further investigations by British authorities and charges will be brought if sufficient evidence is forthcoming.
