Goldman Sachs PA sentenced to seven years for theft
A PA who stole almost £4.5 million from her employers at city investment bank Goldman Sachs has been jailed for seven years.
It emerged during the court hearing at Southwark Crown Court in April that Joyti De-Laurey had not only stolen millions from her employers, but had also stolen £16,000 from her mother during the trial to cover her bills.
De-Laurey had claimed that her employers had given her permission to take the money.
Sentencing De-Laurey yesterday, Judge Christopher Elwe told her "lying was woven into the fabric of your being".
The 35-year-old secretary from North Cheam in Surrey had engaged in an elaborate two-year scheme that had seen her forge cheques and claim that she had received treatment for terminal cancer - in reality De-Laurey had been on a lavish holiday to Beverly Hills.
Arrested by police as she was about to leave the UK, De-Laurey was on her way to a £750,000 seafront villa she had purchased in Cypress. As part of the spending spree with the pilfered cash, she was also awaiting delivery of a £175,000 Aston Martin and a £150,000 powerboat.
Her 51-year-old husband was jailed for 18 months and her mother was given a six-month suspended sentence for helping De-Laurey launder the money stolen from her employers.
Following sentencing, a provisional date was set for a formal seizure of assets hearing.
