Egg producers crack after FA rejection
British egg producers have been told where to get 'oeuf' by the Football Association (FA), after it refused permission for England football's famous three Lions to be printed on the nation's eggs.
Britain's eggs currently carry a single Lion print on the shell to indicate that the product has been protected from salmonella. The British Egg Industry Council has hoped that the FA would allow them to print two more Lions – the national football team's crest – on eggs during this month's European championships.
The council said that the move would simply have been a gesture of support for the England team. However, the FA refused them on the grounds that the request was not appropriate.
The council's chief executive Mark Williams said: "We are not a glossy fizzy drinks brand, but we do sell more than 30 million, nutritious eggs every day."
He added: "We do not want to stick Michael Owen or David Beckham on our eggs - just two more Lions is enough.
"During the competition the nation will eat around 660 million eggs, that's an awful lot of opportunities for the public to lend their support to the team."
