Nine civilians killed in Mosul suicide bombing
At least nine people have been killed and 25 wounded following a suicide bomb attack in the northern Iraqi town of Mosul.
A car bomb was detonated in downtown Mosul several hundred metres from the city hall around 9:15am local time (05.15GMT) this morning.
Witnesses said the car bomb was in an orange and white taxi with three suicide bombers inside. Nine vehicles at the scene caught fire.
The target of the car bomb attack is thought to have been a convoy that included two members of the Ninevah Provincial Council and the Deputy Chief of Police of Mosul. The council members were not wounded, but the deputy chief was slightly injured.
There was no structural damage to the City Hall building, but there is significant damage to buildings in the immediate blast area, a spokesperson for the provisional authority said.
Initial reports had suggested that 10 Iraqi civilians had been killed, and as many as 100 civilians injured. However, the Ninevah Provincial Government's Chief of Staff has readjusted the casualty figures.
Mosul police and Iraqi civil defense corps soldiers have secured the scene, with Coalition forces providing security and medical assistance.
And in a separate incident, two civilian contractors were injured when mortars rounds hit a military base north of Mosul at 10am local time this morning.
