Minister condemns terror attack on Karachi mosque

A terrorist attack on a Mosque in Pakistan which killed 16 people has been condemned by Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien as an attempt to set Shi'a and Sunni Muslims against each other

According to the Pakistan English language newspaper, the Daily Times, at least 16 people were killed and up to 35 were injured when bomb devastated a crowded Shia mosque in Karachi last night.

Authorities suspect that the bombing may have been the result of a suicide attack.

An angry crowd formed following the blast and attacked a bomb disposal van and torched a nearby petrol station. A local hospital was also swamped with rioters and medical staff were assaulted. Police had to use tear gas to disperse the rioters, the newspaper reported.

Mike O'Brien said that the British government was "shocked and horrified at the appalling deaths and injuries to worshippers".

"Clearly the fact that the blast happened during evening prayers was calculated to foment tension between the Sunni and Shi'a Muslims," he said.

"We extend our deep condolences to the families of those killed and of those injured by this outrage and hope that the Pakistani government will be able to successfully tackle this terrorism."
