Ranieri edged out of Stamford Bridge
Walking the plank never took so long – after months of prodding and cajoling, Chelsea football club finally nudged Claudio Ranieri overboard last night.
A short statement on the club's website confirmed what Chelsea fans had known for months, that Ranieri would go.
The Chelsea statement said: “Claudio has done a first class job for the club and paved the way for the future. We would like to wish Claudio all the best for the future.
"We are discussing the exact terms of his departure with him and his representatives."
Speculation immediately switched from Ranieri's longevity to Ranieri's golden goodbye – reported to be as much as £6 million, according to the Daily Telegraph.
The popular Italian leaves Stamford Bridge with no small affection from fans who saw the Superblues secure a Permier league runners-up spot – beating off last year's champions, Manchester United, into third place. And despite spreading Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich's roubles liberally across the European transfer market, playing second fiddle to perhaps the greatest ever Arsenal side in the championship – and making it the Champions League semi-finals with a new-look squad – is no disgrace.
Ranieri may not need to look too far for another job as David Pleat's departure from White Hart Lane could see the 'Tinkerman' move to Tottenham.
Porto coach Jose Mourinho is tipped to be named as Ranieri's successor within the next few days.
