Morecambe Bay body confirmed as cockle picker

Police have confirmed today that a badly decomposed body discovered on a beach in Morecambe Bay in Lancashire this week is that of another cockle picker drowned in February's tragedy.

The body washed up near Bolton-le-Sands bringing the total number of deaths in February's tragedy to 21.

All the victims drowned after becoming trapped on the sands by a rising tide.

In February, the bodies of 20 Chinese cockle pickers were recovered from the scene.

However it was feared that there had been other victims whose bodies had yet to be found.

A police spokesperson said relatives in China were being informed that another as yet unidentified Chinese person's body had been found.
