Housing conference to look at 'sustainable' communities
This year’s Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) conference in Harrogate between June 15 and 18 will be examining design’s contribution to creating sustainable communities and how Local Authorities (LAs) and Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) can deliver great homes, streets and open spaces.
With Government expecting housing organisations to ‘get more bangs for their buck’, the implementation of an effective neighbourhood management strategy and examining how organisations can achieve value (both financial and organisational) plus on-the-ground improvements will very definitely be at the forefront of this year’s CIH conference.
Over a year on from the launch of the Communities Plan, just weeks before the announcement on the next Spending Review and running in parallel with the Scottish Anti-Social Behaviour Bill, this year’s CIH Conference will focus on assessing whether housing organisations across the UK are able to deliver sustainable communities.
Under the theme of Focus on Communities, examining people, places and performance, the conference will offer delegates an increased range and diversity of speakers. There are also added value features with pop-in innovation and policy theatres, an interactive design feature and an advice centre on rural housing.
Advanced bookings for the UK’s leading housing conference are already up and with an expected attendance of well over 5,000.
The Conference is supported by social housing’s largest exhibition, Housing 2004. With over 320 exhibitors, the conference attracts a wide range of housing professionals including tenants, councillors, board members, technical specifiers and private sector partners.

Strike ballot for postal workers
Up to 136,000 postal workers are to be balloted over possible strike action, following the collapse of pay negotiations. The Communication Workers Union said that notice will be issued to Royal Mail on July 3. Ballot papers would then be despatched to union members from July 10, with the ballot closing on July 31.
