Prescott claims 'decent' homes rise by one million

The number of council and housing association homes meeting the 'decent homes' standard has risen by one million, according to Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott.

Mr Prescott said that "up to £3 billion" would make another 170,000 homes "warm, weatherproof and more modern".

Mr Prescott said that in 1997, 2.1 million homes owned by local authorities and housing associations failed to meet the basic standards of decency that tenants deserve. Since then, he said that "over £18 billion of public and private money has transformed social housing in England".

The money allocated today will support 58 schemes to install new windows, kitchens, bathrooms, insulation and central heating.

"We're not only improving homes for millions of people in every region, we've also given tenants more control over the way their homes are managed," said Mr Prescott. "This is all part of the important bigger picture to create thriving sustainable communities that people are proud to belong to."

Progress on this front includes more investment in council housing and affordable homes and a £1 billion investment in housing for key workers.

The government targets aim to make all social housing 'decent' by the end of 2010.
