US airstrike on Fallujah mosque kills 'at least 40'
At least 40 suspected insurgents have been killed in an airstrike against a mosque in the western Iraqi city of Fallujah today.
According to Reuters, a US airforce jet hit the mosque with a laser-guided bomb after a large number of insurgents barricaded themselves inside.
The Abdulaziz al-Samarai mosque was destroyed in the attack. However, a US commander on the ground said that every effort had been made to ensure that the minimum of damage was caused to the surrounding area, which is densely populated.
Fallujah residents were captured by news cameramen last month dismembering the bodies of four US contractors, who had been shot dead in an ambush. The scenes caused outrage when broadcast in the United States.
A sizeable US Marine force is now engaged in 'Vigilant Resolve' – a large-scale operation to 'pacify' rebellious elements throughout the Al Anbar Province and in several cities thought to harbour insurgents.
Operations have been launched along the Syrian border to halt foreign fighters infiltrating into Iraq.
A US Central Command spokesperson confirmed that "heightened operations" included the setting up of a cordon around Fallujah and combat operations in other major cities in the Al Anbar Province.
Earlier today, mosques in Fallujah called for a 'jihad' against Coalition troops, the French wire service AFP reported.
