ID card Bill could be published within a month: Blunkett
Legislation granting the creation of ID cards will be presented before Parliament within the next four or five weeks, the Home Secretary David Blunkett has said today.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Mr Blunkett said that the draft Bill on ID card proposals will be published in matter of weeks – despite the "misgivings" of some Cabinet colleagues over the measures.
However, the Home Secretary said that ID card proposals now enjoyed the "whole-hearted" support of the Prime Minister.
Britain's top policemen, Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir John Stevens, has given his backing to ID cards. He said that the measure was necessary as the threat from terrorists –highlighted by yesterday's discovery of an alleged plot to detonate a chemical bomb in Britain – had heightened in recent months.
