Body found in search for RNLI men
Rescue teams searching for two missing RNLI men off the coast of north Wales have discovered a body washed up on a nearby beach.
The rescue operation was mounted yesterday after harbour master Keith Allday, 54, and assistant harbour master Alan Massey, 37, went missing in the Barmouth area yesterday. The pair were last seen at 11am yesterday laying a mooring in the harbour.
The body of a man was found by officers from North Wales Police at around 3pm today on Fairbourne Beach, a few miles down the coast from Barmouth.
RNLI chief executive Andrew Freemantle said: "Despite the efforts of the many rescue units that took part in the search off Barmouth last night and during the course of today, neither of the two missing men, Keith Allday and Alan Massey, have yet been located. Although the search is continuing, we have to accept that hopes of finding the two alive are fading.
"Their families are feeling the full weight of these tragic events and we share their grief, for these men, a volunteer lifeboat coxswain and a volunteer lifeboat helmsman, are members of the RNLI family.
"As with all search and rescue operations of this nature the RNLI’s volunteer crews, and everyone involved with the search, have acted with dedication and professionalism and we would like to pay tribute to their selflessness and courage."
The Barmouth and Pwllheli lifeboats and Barmouth Inshore lifeboats have been searching the area around Barmouth, the Barmouth estuary and out to sea. On land, the Harlech, Aberdovey and Barmouth Coastguard Rescue Teams had been searching the shoreline at Barmouth.
An RAF rescue helicopter also joined the search this morning. Police divers searched the area around the moorings, but nothing was found.
