'Delight' at rescue of British cavers
The government has spoken of its "delight" at the rescue of six British cavers who became trapped in a flooded underground system in Mexico.
The six men, five of whom are believed to belong to the British armed forces, became trapped on March 17 after rains raised the water level in the cave, cutting off their exit.
The men, who are all experienced cavers and were on an adventure training holiday, said that their ordeal had been relatively comfortable as they had planned for such an emergency – and had set up a small camp in the area.
Specialist divers flew in from Britain to help in the rescue effort, and the group swam to safety yesterday.
Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell said: "I am delighted at the news of the rescue of the six British cavers trapped in the caves in Cuetzelan in Mexico. We are extremely grateful to all the Mexican authorities who have played their part in this operation.
"I hope to speak to my Mexican counterpart, Lourdes Aranda, today to thank her personally."
The cavers will meet with Mexican immigration officials before returning home to Britain.
