Man arrested over Morecambe cockle-picking deaths

A man has been arrested by police investigating the deaths of 20 cockle-pickers, who drowned in Morecambe Bay last month.

The 33-year-old Chinese man was arrested in Liverpool last night on suspicion of manslaughter. He is being questioned by Lancashire police and is understood to have helped organise the cockle-picking on the day of the deaths.

Twenty people – 18 men and two women – drowned in Morecambe Bay, Lancashire, after being trapped by rising tides while out picking cockles on February 5.

Eight people have been held prior to last night's arrest, but all have been released after questioning.
