Leicester boss vows to stay on as trio stay in jail
Leicester City boss Mickey Adams has vowed to stay on at the club as three of his players spend their fifth day in a Spanish jail.
In a statement released on the club's website today, Mr Adams acknowledged that it had been a "difficult time" for everyone connected with the club. He revealed that he had "thought long and hard" over his position, but said that the right thing to do was to stay on and help the club fight for premiership survival.
Club captain Paul Dickov, Keith Gillespie and Frank Sinclair are being held in a jail in Murcia following their arrest last Thursday. The trio were among nine players who were detained after three German women alleged that they had been sexually assaulted in a hotel in La Manga. The Leicester City squad flew into La Manga on March 1 for a training camp.
The three Foxes' players were charged with sexual aggression and remanded in custody by a judge in Alicante on Friday. All three strenuously deny the charges.
Three other players, Matt Elliott, Lilian Nalis and James Scowcroft were released on "provisional liberty" by the court last week. They have now returned to the UK.
The Spanish Judge adjourned proceedings today to consider bail applications from Mr Dickov, Mr Gillespie and Mr Sinclair. This will see the three players spend a fifth night behind bars. The players were said to be "doing well" today after spending the weekend in jail.
Earlier today, Micky Adams spoke his "concern" at the behaviour of a few of his squad.
"Without wishing to prejudge the criminal investigations and our own club investigation, I am deeply concerned about the actions of a minority of my players. I have spoken to them on many occasions about the need to conduct themselves properly on and off the pitch at all times," he said.
"I have held a staff meeting at the training ground this morning to tell them all what I expect of them. The board of directors of the club will be heading up a full internal investigation which has my full support."
Mr Adams went on to thank fans who have offered their support since the arrests occurred.
Mr Adams continued: "It is the responsibility of the players and myself to do everything possible to restore their pride in this football club once again."
