Consultation on changes to burial law published
The government is seeking views from the public, faith groups and other interested parties on how best to manage burial grounds in the future.
A new consultation paper on maintenance of burial grounds, exhumation and the possible re-use of old burial grounds, has been published. Responses from the consultation will feed into a review of burial law already underway.
Home Office Minister Paul Goggins said the issue deserved an "informed debate".
"The public must have a realistic choice in the funeral arrangements for their relatives and cemeteries must be well managed and accessible. The services provided by burial and cremation authorities should be professional, caring and sensitive to serve the needs of the community," he said.
"But we want to ensure that any change - in particular with regards to the re-use of graves - is acceptable. I hope that members of the public will take this opportunity to have their say in how they would like this reform to develop."
The consultation period will end on 13 July 2004.

A public consultation on the future of library closures is to take place in two weeks, Camden Council has announced. The council said it wants "as many people as possible to tell us how we should prioritise our spending in the future" before the consultation closes on 06 October.

Public Consultation Launched On New Silvertown Tunnel
A public consultation has been launched for proposed east London rvier crossing, the Silvertown Tunnel, which would connect Greenwich Peninsula with the Royal Docks. The proposed tunnel, which it is estimated would cost £750m, would help reduce congestion, with London Mayor, Boris Johnson, describing it as a "vital new link".

BAE Announces 440 Job Cuts
BAE Systems have announced that it is to cut 440 management jobs across its UK operations. The defence giant has said that it has taken the decision following a review of its management structures. The company say that 286 of the job cuts will be made in Lancashire, with the rest to be made up in Yorkshire, Dorset, Surrey, Lincolnshire and Norfolk.
