London unveils 2012 Olympic bid

Prime Minister Tony Blair joined Olympic athletes, politicians, business leaders and Londoners for the unveiling of the capital's 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games bids.

In front of an audience also including London Mayor Ken Livingstone and athletes such as Jonathan Edwards, London 2012 chairman Barbara Cassani said that the games would "enhance sport in London and the UK forever".

Barbara Cassani said: "Hosting the Games in the UK will bring out the best of our athletes. And the pride of the entire nation will bring back that Rugby World Cup victory feeling. Imagine that pride replicated across 28 Olympic sports.

"Winning the 2012 games will be good for British industry: construction, hotel, airline, retail the list goes on.

"More people will get off the couch and get involved in sport. They will be inspired. Wide-ranging sport programmes will encourage greater participation. The nation will be fitter and more active. Our aim is to deliver excellence without extravagance."

She added: "But to win, we need support from everyone. Thousands have already been in touch with us to offer support. Athletes and sporting organisations are rallying around the Bid to improve the prospects of UK competitors.

"Our blueprint delivers. For athletes, for spectators, for the people of London and the whole of the UK."

The document containing the full details of London's bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games was forwarded to the headquarters of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) yesterday.

Copies of the 50-page booklet and two CD-ROMS showing maps of London's proposals were delivered to Lausanne, Switzerland, ahead of yesterday's midnight deadline for all nine bidding cities. The nine cities are: London, Paris, Madrid, New York, Rio de Janeiro, Moscow, Leipzig, Istanbul and Havana. London, Paris and Moscow are viewed as the frontrunners at this stage of the process.

The IOC will assess each set of responses before announcing its list of candidate cities on May 18.
