Government gives backing to new Thames bridge

A new bridge to span the Thames in East London will be supported by up to £200 million of government PFI credits, it has been announced today.

The Thames Gateway Bridge would link Beckton north of the river with Thamesmead to the south. Transport for London (TfL) estimates that it could create 25,000 jobs.

The £450 million development and construction cost would be met jointly through TfL, a toll on vehicles using the bridge and also by up to £200 million PFI credits.

A recent study found that 85% of East Londoners want the bridge to be built, the government said. Authorisation of the project is subject to a public inquiry.

London Transport Minister Tony McNulty said: "It would not only provide a huge much-needed boost to the local economy, but stand as an impressive landmark representing a positive future for the Thames Gateway region."

The bridge will have two lanes in either direction for cars and other private vehicles and will also have separate lanes for public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

The proposed bridge scheme is a major part of Mayor of London Ken Livingstone and TfL's plans to improve transport and accessibility to and from East London.
