Annan hails India-Pakistan summit breakthrough
The UN secretary general has hailed a breakthrough in worsening diplomatic relations between Pakistan and India.
Lauding new contacts between the leaders of both nuclear-capable nations, Kofi Annan today urged further dialogue between the two South Asian nations to settle their differences. Yesterday's was the first official face-to-face contact between the two governments in three years.
In a statement, Mr Annan welcomed the meetings held in Islamabad yesterday and today between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee of India with Pakistan's President, Pervez Musharraf, and its Prime Minister, Zafarullah Khan Jamali.
Mr Annan said that this was "an important step forward" in bilateral efforts and he urged both nations to create "new impetus to serious and sustained dialogue".

New Kashmir ceasefire deal welcomed by UN
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has today "warmly" welcomed Pakistan's decision to implement a unilateral ceasefire in Kashmir. The ceasefire runs along the line of control in Jammu and Kashmir, and comes into effect from the Muslim festival of Eid Al-Fitr – which signifies the end of the Ramadan – beginning today.
