Man killed after thief attempted to steal car

A man has died this morning after a car thief drove his own car over him outside Liverpool's John Lennon Airport.

At around 5.30am, the 57-year-old man was unloading suitcases from the boot of his car when the car thief struck. His wife had just left the passenger seat to get a trolley when the youth jumped into the driver's seat of the couple's Volvo.

The man went round to the front of the car to investigate whereupon the youth drove the car over him, trapping him under the wheels. The youth escaped in a maroon Escort driven by an accomplice.

Emergency services arrived a short time later but the man died at the scene.

The victim's wife is being comforted by police officers.

Detectives have appealed for anyone who may have information on the incident to come forward.
