Two seriously injured in Staffordshire pile-up

At least two people have been seriously injured in a pile-up near Lichfield in Staffordshire this morning.

The initial pile-up occurred amid thick fog on the southbound carriageway of the A38 between Streethay and Fradley at around 9.45am this morning. Three coaches carrying schoolchildren, a lorry, and around 15 cars were involved.

However, it is understood that as many as 30 vehicles eventually joined the pile-up with multiple collisions occurring at the scene as motorists failed to spot the crash in time to avoid hitting debris and stationary vehicles.

At least 30 people were injured and local hospitals' A&E units were on alert to receive the injured some of whom were taken to Burton-on-Trent's Queen's Hospital.

Fire crews were initially called to a vehicle fire at the scene and it is thought that the smoke from this vehicle had further reduced visibility in the area.

One of the coach drivers trapped in the wreckage had to be cut free.

Both carriageways were closed for a time as rescue operation at the scene continued throughout the day. Police have warned motorists to avoid the area this afternoon, although the northbound carriageway was reopened.

Five die in motorway pile up
Five people have died and at least six were injured - three seriously - in a pile up involving 11 vehicles on the M1 motorway in Leicestershire this morning. The collision occurred at about 7.25am and involved a tank transporter, lorries and a number of cars. Emergency crews attending the scene had to cut some people from their vehicles.

Traffic Havoc As M4 Pileup Injures 13
Up to 13 people have been injured in an early morning motorway pile-up, according to police. The accident involved two lorries, an empty coach and four cars on the M4 motorway in Wiltshire at about 1.45am today, Tuesday. One of the casualties is understood to be seriously hurt.

Three Seriously Injured In M3 Minibus Crash
Three people have been seriously injured in a crash on the M3. It is thought a minibus travelling on the southbound carriageway suffered a tyre blow-out, leaving three people with "life-threatening injuries" and six others, including two children, "walking wounded" according to police.

Chemical Spill Closes Part Of A1 Carriageway
A chemical spill caused by an accident involving two lorries closed part of the A1 in North Yorkshire on Monday. North Yorkshire Police said the crash happened on the northbound carriageway at 4.00pm. The road was closed for more than four hours, but had reopened by 9.00pm.

M40 Closed After Fatal Accident
One person has died following a crash on the M40 in Oxfordshire this morning. The motorway is closed in both directions between Bicester and Banbury, after a lorry collided with two other vehicles before it crashed through the central reservation at around 6am. One of the vehicles involved was carrying oxyacetylene gas canisters.
