'Camden Ripper' receives three life sentences
The man accused of killing three women in Camden flat last year has been handed down three life sentences at the Old Bailey today.
Anthony Hardy, 53, asked to have his plea changed to guilty when he appeared in the dock at the Old Bailey this morning. Following a request by his solicitor to have the charges presented again to Hardy in court, the accused replied "guilty" to the three murder charges.
In December 2002, the remains of 34-year-old Bridgette MacClennan and 29-year-old Elizabeth Valad were found in bins outside a flat in Camden. A homeless man discovered pieces of human legs in a bin near to a north London pub.
Earlier, in January last year, the body of 31-year-old Sally White were discovered at an address in Royal College Street also in London. Following an initial post-mortem Ms White was originally thought to have died from of a massive heart attack, but subsequent evidence led to a finding of murder.
Hardy had been sectioned and committed to a psychiatric hospital because he was considered to be a danger to himself and others. But he was released in November by a medical panel who said that he posed no risk to the public.
In December the remains of the two women were discovered in bins in north London.
On the change of plea, the case was adjourned until this morning when sentencing was carried out.
