Nation gears up for Children In Need appeal

Thousands of people across the United Kingdom were taking part in fundraising events today ahead of tonight's annual Children In Need charity event.

The seven-hour TV marathon, which begins at 7pm, will see numerous celebrities, alongside ordinary members of the public, take part in events in an attempt to surpass last year's fundraiser which raised more than £26 million.

Live concerts, competitions, a special Bargain Hunt and a remake of the Wizard of Oz is just a few of the events taking place on tonight's show.

Shane Richie, who plays Alfie Moon in EastEnders, will also be showcasing this year's Children in Need single, 'I'm Your Man', a remake of the huge 80's hit.

Shane said: "I was thrilled when I was approached to do this song, as I totally believe in the work Children In Need do. I'm very happy with the way it's turned out and very excited about its chances.

Since it began in 1980, BBC Children in Need has raised more than £325 million for charities supporting children's welfare.

The money goes towards improving the lives of British children who have experienced problems or hardships, such as abuse, serious illness and poverty.
