Authorities urge Jackson to give himself up

Negotiations are continuing between representatives of the singer Michael Jackson and authorities, for the artist to meet with police to face allegations of child molestation.

A warrant was issued for the singer's arrest on Tuesday over allegations that he molested a boy younger than 14 years of age, it has been reported.

On Tuesday, investigators from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department and the Santa Barbara District Attorney's Office served a search warrant at Jackson's Neverland Ranch.

At the same time as the Neverland Ranch search – which involved around 70 investigators – two search warrants were also served in Southern California.

An arrest warrant for Mr Jackson was also issued for "multiple counts of child molestation". The bail amount on the warrant has been set at $3 million.

A statement issued by a spokesperson for Michael Jackson, who was in Las Vegas filming a music video, said that lawyers had made arrangements with the Santa Barbara District Attorney for the singer to return to Santa Barbara to "immediately confront and prove these charges unfounded".

The spokesperson described the allegations as "outrageous" and "false".

The spokesperson added: "Michael would never harm a child in any way. These scurrilous and totally unfounded allegations will be proven false in a courtroom.

"When the evidence is presented and the allegations proven to be malicious and wholly unfounded, Michael will be able to put this nightmare behind him."

District Attorney Thomas Sneddon said that it was anticipated that formal charges would be filed "very soon".

Mr Sneddon said that no civil suit had been filed nor was it anticipated, and that the alleged victim was "cooperative".

Michael Jackson has also been ordered to surrender his passport when he is taken into custody.
