Coastguards walk British coastline for charity

Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) Coastguards have been taking on Britain's coastline again today – but in far less threatening circumstances than usual as they continue their sponsored walk round the island.

Coastguards on the Round Britain Coastwalk have now covered 3,000 miles, and are currently heading south down the Yorkshire coast. Over the next few months, the walk will be turning the last corner and heading west along the south coast to finish at Land's End where it started back in January 2002.

The Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST), a UK sailing charity which promotes the integration of able bodied and physically disabled people through tall ship sailing, will be the sole beneficiary.

The walk has now crossed three naturist beaches, been officially blessed by a vicar, and as well as rescuing people, cows and sheep, Coastguards on the walk have recently rescued a horse which had decided to swim out to sea.

Teams are carrying the Coastguard flag, 'Coastie' the teddy mascot, and a bottle of Pussers Navy Rum which will be auctioned at the end of the walk.

Two hundred Coastguard Rescue Teams have taken part to date, and the enthusiasm of the walkers and general public they have met en route had been tremendous, a spokesperson said.

Fundraising along the way has exceeded all expectations and is fast approaching £16,000.

John McClymont, Watch Officer at Holyhead who organised the event, said: "The Coastguard Coastwalk aims to increase the profile of the MCA and the JST, an amazing charity which enables people of all ages and abilities to sail on two specially designed tall ships the 'Lord Nelson' and the 'Tenacious'".
