Iraqi bomb death toll rises

Twenty-three people have now been reported killed following a huge explosion today which rocked the southern town of Nasiriya.

Reports this afternoon suggest that 15 Italians – three soldiers, 11 policemen, one civilian – and eight Iraqis were killed when the bomb ripped through the Italian controlled police headquarters at around 07.45GMT.

It is thought that a suicide bomber was responsible for the attack.

Elsewhere, the head of US armed forces in Iraq has said that insurgents "will fail" to break the coalition.

Just hours before this recent outrage, Lt Gen Ricardo Sanchez warned that the coalition would not hesitate to "employ the appropriate levels of combat power in order to safeguard the interests and safety of the Iraqi people, as well as our coalition service members". He further revealed that insurgency had increased of late and coalition forces are now facing around 30 to 35 attacks in a day.

The general's warning comes three days after US forces used 500-pound precision-guided bombs to attack guerilla arms caches and hide-outs around Tikrit.

And in America, during a speech to commemorate Veteran's Day, President George Bush said that America would "finish the mission we have begun".
