Six US personnel killed in helicopter crash
Six US military personnel have been killed in Iraq today after their Black Hawk helicopter came down close to the northern town of Tikrit.
It is not yet known whether the aircraft came down as a result of mechanical problems or hostile fire. However, initial reports from eyewitnesses have suggested that the transport helicopter was hit in the side by a missile or possibly a rocket propelled grenade.
This is the second helicopter the US has lost near Tikrit in the last two weeks. On October 25, a Black Hawk was downed in a missile attack, slightly injuring one airman.
Last week 16 US soldiers were killed when a Chinook was hit with a surface-to-air-missile close to the town of Falluja. Twenty-six others were injured in the attack.
US investigators are at the scene of the crash to determine the precise causes of the crash.
