Mental health consultation for ethnic communities launched

A consultation on how best to improve mental health services for black and minority ethnic communities has been launched today.

The consultation paper, 'Delivering Race Equality: A Framework for Action', will not only look at how to improve mental health care for ethnic minorities, but also how to ensure that those communities know about and use the services available.

Statistics show that black people are over six times as likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act than the rest of the population. The suicide rate for women from India and East Africa is 40% higher than those born in England and Wales.

Health Minister Rosie Winterton said: "To achieve race equality and better community relations, whether in central government, local government, health services, voluntary groups or local communities, all of us need to work together to deliver better services for people from black and minority ethnic communities."

The Department of Health has set a target of 500 Community Development Workers by 2006. These workers will play an important part in helping services implement the framework for action.

The consultation will run until 23 January 2004 with a full review to take place in 2007.
