Children to have say in Commissioner appointment
The new Children's Commissioner will be chosen with the help of children and young people, the government announced today.
Margaret Hodge, Minister for Children, Young People and Families, said that children "must be involved" in choosing the Commissioner if they are to truly represent their views.
The Children's Commissioner for England will advise on children's issues and consult children to ensure their views are fed into policy-making. The Commissioner will report to Parliament via the Secretary of State for Education and Skills.
The appointment was announced last month with the publication of the Green Paper 'Every Child Matters'.
Speaking at the start of Local Democracy Week Ms Hodge said: "We have made good progress in involving children, young people and their families in decision-making. But we need to build on that and we need to keep working to get better, so that listening and hearing children's views becomes part of the culture."
The Minister announced that a progress report would be published this week that outlines the work different government departments are carrying out to involve children.
"New and innovative schemes are already in place to encourage young people's involvement in ways which enthuse and engage them," she said.
