Rugby World Cup enlisted in UN's 'Tackle Hunger' campaign
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) today appointed former Rugby World Cup-winning captains Nick Farr-Jones of Australia and David Kirk of New Zealand as ambassadors for the 'Tackle Hunger' campaign launched earlier this year after UN agency teamed up with Rugby World Cup (RWC).
Over the next two months, Mr Farr-Jones and Mr Kirk will help WFP capitalize on the RWC's estimated 3.5 billion global audience by raising awareness of the plight of 800 million chronically hungry people around the world, the agency said in a statement released in Sydney.
The Australian government has reported that it will give an additional $7.5 million of food aid to southern Africa through 'Tackle Hunger'.
So far, Australia has committed $43.5 million to reducing the impact of food crises in Africa, including $31 million through WFP.
WFP said the its alliance with RWC “will bring greater awareness to hunger and malnutrition which claim 25,000 lives a day– more than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.”
The world cup, which is being staged in Australia and New Zealand, begins tomorrow when holders Australia take on Argentina.
