Amos named as new House of Lords speaker

It has been announced today that the House of Lords is to receive its first speaker from an ethic minority, as a result of the government reshuffle following the death of Lord Williams of Mostyn.

Baroness Valerie Amos – who took up the post of International Development Secretary in the wake of Clare Short's resignation over the war in Iraq – was confirmed as the new speaker today by the Queen.

Her vacated seat on the Cabinet will be taken up by Hilary Benn – whose father Tony served on the Wilson and Callaghan front bench in the 60s and 70s.
