Investigation Launched After Patient Dies In Glasgow Hospital

An investigation has been launched following the death of a patient at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow, it has been reported.

According to a report by the Daily Record newspaper, it was claimed an "elderly man" died on a trolley in a corridor at the hospital earlier this week. He is said to have suffered cardiac arrest after waiting eight hours for treatment. The incident happened on Tuesday.

In a statement, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) said it was carrying out a review into the claims, but its immediate assessment unit was "under extra pressure" when the patient was at the hospital.

It said: "The unit was fully staffed but was put under extra pressure as a result of a higher than average number of patients attending the department and patients waiting longer than usual to be admitted.

"Our staff worked extremely hard to ensure patients attending the hospital were assessed, investigated, diagnosed, treated and admitted to a bed or discharged as quickly as possible and we apologise to those patients who had a long wait."
