Police Officer Killed During Stolen Car Chase
A police officer has been struck and killed by a stolen car during a pursuit in Merseyside.
The incident happened in the early hours of this morning, 05 October.
The officer was struck by a red Mitsubishi pick-up vehicle which mounted a central reservation along the Wallasey Dock North Road at about 2:08am.
It is understood the officer was responding to a burglary at an estate agents on Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead just after 1am this morning.
During the raid the offenders stole the vehicle which was then pursued by officers.
The policeman killed was one of two neighbourhood patrol officers who deployed a stop stick in a bid to stop the car.
He was taken to Arrowe Park Hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later.
A murder investigation has now been launched and police are examining CCTV footage.
The scene has been cordoned off while forensic examinations are being carried out.
Police are urging witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

Ian Tomlinson Unlawfully Killed, Finds Jury
An inquest jury has ruled that Ian Tomlinson was unlawfully killed at the G20 protests in London. Mr Tomlinson, 47, died after he was struck by a baton by Pc Simon Harwood on 1 April 2009 during the London protests. The jury determined the officer used "excessive and unreasonable" force on Mr Tomlinson who was not taking part in the protests.
