Window Cleaners Rescued From Cleaning Platform

Two window cleaners have been rescued after being stuck in a cleaning cradle on the tenth floor of a building in central London on Wednesday afternoon.

It is understood that the two men had been trapped on the cradle for several hours before London Fire Brigade (LFB) was called at 16:17.

LFB said that the men were rescued from the platform, there were no reports of any injuries and the incident was over by 18:16.

Parliament cleaners on strike again
Cleaners in the Houses of Parliament are staging another 24-hour strike, as part of an ongoing pay dispute. Around 140 cleaners have demanded a pay increase – from £5.20 per hour to £6.70 – as well as improvements in their working conditions, including the provision of sick pay and pensions.

Over two thirds of the UK’s street cleaners have faced physical or verbal abuse, while carrying out their job, a new report has claimed. The report, by the British Cleaning Council (BCC), found that some street cleaners had faced attacks with guns, knives and drug needles.

Street cleaners and other street workers have been urged to help fight crime by becoming the eyes and ears of a community. A report by the Audit Commission said that street workers employed by councils to observe low-level criminal activity in a community would not place an extra burden on them or the police.

Parliament cleaners receive pay rise
Cleaners at the Houses of Parliament are to receive a pay rise, after settling their long-running pay dispute. The workers' rate of pay will increase in stages from £5.20 to £6.70 per hour by next January, under the terms of a deal agreed with the Transport and General Workers Union.
