Schools Minister Launches GSCE And A Levels Revisions Consultation
Schools Minister Nick Gibb has announced a new consultation is to be held on further revised subject content for GCSE and A Levels.
The proposed revisions are for six GCSE subjects and nine A levels. If approved the plans will be introduced in 2017.
Announcing the consultation, Minister Gibb, said: "We are reforming GCSEs and A Levels to be rigorous and more knowledge-based, and to match the qualifications used in the best education systems in the world. Our objective is to ensure that young people leave our education system equipped to compete with the best performers across the globe.
"The reforms aim to ensure that GCSEs are more academically demanding and will be qualifications in which students, employers, and further education colleges and universities can have confidence. At A Level, our reforms aim to ensure that they prepare students for undergraduate study.
"A priority in the development of the new qualifications has been to ensure that subject experts, particularly university academics in the relevant subjects, are involved in determining the subject content.
The subject content documents being published today set new expectations which all awarding organisations’ specifications must meet. Awarding organisations have drafted the content, working with subject experts, the Department for Education and. An additional consultation will be published in the autumn with content for government and politics, and geology .
"This consultation is an opportunity for all those with an interest in these subjects to provide their views which will be considered when redrafting the content for final publication."

PM Backs BBC 6's Retention
Gordon Brown has joined the call to save threatened BBC radio station 6 Music. The digital station is facing closure as part of a shake-up of the corporation, which will divert an extra £600 million into programme-making. But the Prime Minister told the Radio Times that the BBC should not have "succumbed to pressure" to axe some of its output.

Deepcut abuse allegations subject of independent review
Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram told MPs today that Deepcut army barracks in Surrey will be the subject of an independent investigation following allegations of abuse. Confirmation of the independent review will come as welcome news to the families of the four recruits who died at the base between 1995 and 2002.

War hero subject of second MoD probe
It has emerged today that Colonel Tim Collins, the British Army commander who won international plaudits for his moving pre-battle speech in Iraq, is the subject of a second MoD probe. The second inquiry surrounds the apparent suicide of an 18-year-old private soldier at Drumaad barracks, Co Armagh in Northern Ireland, two years ago.
