Investigation Launched Over Shoreham Air Crash Message
Sussex Police has confirmed it is investigating two officers for gross misconduct regarding a private message sent via social media after the Shoreham Airshow crash last month.
It is understood the investigation relates to two Brighton and Hove-based officers and a private message that was allegedly sent to a third person, who was a colleague. They are said to have immediately reported the incident to the force's Professional Standards Department.
On 22 August, 11 people were killed when a vintage Hawker Hunter jet crashed into the A27 carriageway. It was taking part in the Shoreham Airshow when the incident occurred.
In a statement, Deputy Chief Constable Olivia Pinkney, said: "I cannot emphasise how upset I am that we are investigating such an allegation. My colleagues have informed the victims' families and apologised to them for the unnecessary distress it will undoubtedly cause them.
"They are disappointed as we all are. Such an allegation impacts on everyone who was affected by the crash and detracts from the professionalism of hundreds of colleagues who have worked so tirelessly on this operation. All our efforts are focused on providing the families with the answers they are looking for."
She added that the officers involved are "quite new in service" and have not been suspended, as she wants them to "work to earn their pay while this is investigated. In the meantime they have been assigned duties away from public contact."
