Fugitive Arrested After Returning To UK From Spain

One of the UK's most wanted criminals has been arrested after returning to the UK from Spain.

47-year-old Anthony Dennis was wanted on suspicion of conspiracy to commit drug trafficking offences outside the UK and conspiracy to import class A drugs.

He was one of 13 "most wanted" fugitives that the National Crime Agency displayed on a 13ft high digital screen in Spain. It is believed that Mr Dennis returned to the UK to avoid being spotted in Spain. He was arrested in London Colney, Hertfordshire on 04 August.

He appeared before Westminster Magistrates Court on Thursday morning and has been remanded in custody until 28 August 2015.

Steve Reynolds, Deputy Director at the National Crime Agency, said: "The aim of taking the digital screen to hot-spot areas was to flush the fugitives out. This seems to have been the case with Anthony Dennis. Having his face displayed in plain sight meant he had no-where to hide, forcing him back to the UK to face justice."

Lord Ashcroft, KCMG PC, Founder and Chair of Crimestoppers, said:

"We had never used the digital advertising screen as part of Operation Captura before but it is clear that sending it into the fugitives' 'back yards' and putting their faces in plain sight has proved incredibly effective.

"It is fantastic that Anthony Dennis has been arrested just four weeks after his face appeared on the screen and I hope this serves as a warning to the remaining fugitives that they cannot escape justice forever."
