Protected Trees 'Deliberately' Poisoned In Lancashire
Five mature beech trees have been deliberately poisoned in Lancashire, according to The Woodland Trust.
The trees, understood to be sixty years old, were found with drill holes at their bases in Laund Clough Woods near Accrington.
The trust said a poison, most likely glyphosate, had been poured into the holes.
The incident is being treated as a criminal offence due to the trees being given protection by an official Tree Preservation Order.
The costs to remove the trees is likely to run in access of £2,000.
Colin Riley, site manager, said: "During my fifteen years at the Woodland Trust, I have never seen damage on this scale.
"I cannot fathom why someone would wilfully destroy trees in this way – especially given their age and protected status."
